
Raffaele Scarpellini (born in Forlì, Italy, on October 19th, 1993) received his Veterinary degree from the University of Bologna in October 2017, with a final grade of 110/110 cum laude. After few years spent abroad (mainly in Spain) working as a small animals practitioner, he moved back to Bologna in 2020, when he started his PhD at the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences, finalized in 2024. During his PhD, he spent 6 months as a visiting fellow at Complutense University, Madrid. His doctoral work was dedicated to addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in companion animals. His thesis title was “Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections in veterinary teaching hospitals” and was evaluated with final grade Excellent. Following the completion of his PhD, he continued his work as a post-doctoral research fellow in the same department, with a focus on antimicrobial stewardship and infection control strategies. In the academic year 2024-25, he was Contract Professor for the courses “Hygiene in veterinary practices” and “Hygiene in farms” of the degree program “Veterinary technical assistance sciences” of the University of Padova, Italy. In 2025, he has been invited as invited speaker at the XXVII Symposium of the Spanish Association of Veterinary Specialists in Laboratory Diagnostics. He is currently a member of ANIV (National Association of Veterinary Infectious Disease Specialists). He has authored several peer-reviewed publications on AMR and infectious diseases affecting a range of species, presenting the results at numerous national and international conferences and receiving two awards for best oral presentations. His ongoing goal is to fill the gap between research and clinical practice by developing practical AMR protocols for veterinary facilities, promoting early detection and enhancing communication strategies.
