Position Summary

UCD School of Veterinary Medicine is the only Veterinary School in Ireland and offers degree programmes in Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Nursing. The portfolio of educational offerings in the School of Veterinary Medicine includes both undergraduate and graduate entry streams to veterinary medicine, veterinary nursing, an expanding range of taught graduate programmes, structured and thematic PhD programmes, specialist clinical training (residency/DVMS programmes) and continuing professional development offerings. These programmes maintain the highest educational standards and are recognised for their quality nationally and internationally. A wide variety of pedagogical approaches are employed, including enquiry-based learning, blended and online learning and small group teaching. The veterinary microbiology diagnostic laboratories of the UCD Veterinary Hospital (UCDVH) provide rapid in-house veterinary diagnostic services to veterinary practitioners around Ireland, participate in teaching veterinary and nursing students and practitioners, and provide analytical and interpretive support for veterinary, agricultural and medical research.

In the context of our new internationally accredited (AVMA, EAEVE, RCVS) ‘spiral scaffolded’ MVB curriculum with its central themes of clinical skills training and professionalism, we now wish to recruit a veterinary microbiologist who will make a specific contribution to these strands across all years of the MVB degree programme.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching of veterinary microbiology (lectures, tutorials and practical classes) on the veterinary medicine and veterinary nursing programmes
  • Participation in formal student assessment.
  • Contribution to curriculum development and innovation in teaching and assessment
  • Contribution to the diagnostic services of UCD Veterinary Hospital
  • Development of a research programme in the area of Veterinary Microbiology
  • Supervision of masters (MVM) and doctoral (DVMS, PhD) students and projects, as appropriate.
  • Dissemination of the results of research through publication in peer-reviewed international academic journals and other fora.
  • Contribution as a member of administrative committees to the successful functioning of the School of Veterinary Medicine and the University.
  • Maintenance of the highest professional standards that enhance the reputation of the University.
  • Undertaking such other duties as requested by their line management that are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post.

Opportunities to develop skills and experience in teaching, learning and assessment will be provided, and participation in, and development of, research expertise will be supported. The post is suitable for a veterinary graduate wishing to pursue an academic career in a busy and prestigious veterinary school.

Salary: 95 Lecturer/Asst Professor Above The Bar (7943) €64,112 – €101,524 per annum

Appointment will be made on scale and in accordance with the Department of Finance guidelines.

Mandatory:

Experience and Qualifications

  • A Degree in Veterinary Medicine which can be registered with the Veterinary Council of Ireland
  • A relevant postgraduate qualification (Dip. from a relevant European or American specialist veterinary
    microbiology college, PhD).
  • Experience in microbiological research and / or diagnostics, with emphasis on veterinary virology
  • A high level of written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent communication and computer skills.
  • Excellent team working skills
  • Candidates must demonstrate how they can positively contribute to fostering an inclusive environment
    and a level of awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion

Desirable:

A track record of research achievement and peer-review publications, also including grant application.

  • Experience of third level/university teaching
  • Evidence of initiative in the areas of both research and teaching & learning
  • Experience in veterinary clinical practice
