Dr Erik van Engelen

After I finished a master in Biology at Wageningen University and a DVM at Utrecht University, I was bovine practitioner, followed by being lecturer at the Department of Pathobiology at the Veterinary Faculty Utrecht University. After finishing my PhD, I moved to Royal GD to be involved in research with regards to diagnostic microbiology in 2008. After 3 years work in microbiology with emphasis on serological techniques, an official training course of four years started for becoming specialist veterinary microbiology. This resulted in an recognition as Diplomate in Veterinary Microbiology of the Royal Netherlands Veterinary Association (RNVA) in 2015 and of the ECVM in 2021.

I am employed as Senior Scientist at the Research and Development department of Royal GD, one of the large veterinary laboratories in the world with nearly five million lab-analysis each year. In this function, together with another colleague, I am responsible for the quality of bacteriological cultures, 250.000 samples annually. Besides that, I am responsible for development and implementation of new innovative procedures in veterinary microbiology and especially bacteriology, and for the execution of large projects for clients like the government or industry with regards to the diagnosis of infectious animal diseases in The Netherlands. This results in reports to the clients and, if possible in publications in scientific journals.
