Resident

Samuel J. Pearce is a PhD candidate and Veterinary Microbiology Resident at the University of Liverpool. He completed his Bachelor of Veterinary Science at the University of Bristol and intercalated a Master of Health Sciences Research where he studied the epidemiology of enteric disease agents in UK deer populations. After graduating in 2022, he moved to the island of Jersey, gaining experience in mixed veterinary practice before advancing his clinical training with a rotating Small Animal Internship at the University of Cambridge, which he completed in 2024.

Throughout this time, Sam has conducted several studies on antimicrobial stewardship and infectious diseases in veterinary and human health. His interests encompass all aspects of antimicrobial stewardship, One Health, infections in acute and critical care populations, and a particular focus on the development of digital tools to facilitate clinical and epidemiological analyses of clinical microbiology data. His doctoral research concentrates on developing surveillance approaches for antimicrobial resistance in the healthy horse population of the UK.

Outside of his clinical and research roles, Sam serves as a council member for the Royal Society of Medicine Comparative Medicine section and secretary of the UK One Health Coordination Group. He is also a science communicator, writing about veterinary infectious disease and antimicrobial stewardship to help others rationalise their antimicrobial prescribing.
