Prof Bryan Markey

Dr Bryan Markey MVB, PhD, DipStat, MRCVS is professor of veterinary microbiology in the School of Veterinary Medicine, University College Dublin (UCD). He qualified from UCD in 1985 and worked in practice for a short time before returning to UCD, first as a house surgeon and then as a junior member of the academic staff. In 1991 he was awarded a PhD by Queen’s University, Belfast for research into enzootic abortion of ewes (EAE). He was subsequently promoted to College Lecturer, then to Senior Lecturer and finally Professor. From 2002 to 2004 he served as head of the Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Parasitology. In 2005 he spent several months on sabbatical at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane researching chlamydial infections of marsupials. In 2018 he was appointed head of the Section of Veterinary Pathobiology. Professor Markey has co-authored five books on veterinary microbiology and more than 70 peer reviewed scientific articles in international journals. His research interests are focused on infectious diseases of veterinary importance including chlamydial infections, Johne’s disease and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). From 2009 to 2018 he chaired the management group of UCD Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories. In 2016 he was appointed to the Health Products Regulatory Authority’s statutory Advisory Committee for Veterinary Medicines. He is a member of Animal Health Ireland’s technical working group for Johne’s disease.
