Elsa L Duarte received her veterinary degree from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine University of Lisbon, Portugal in 1996. She worked the following 4 years in a private small animal practice and simultaneously completed a Master Degree in Marine Science at the University of Porto. Elsa joined the academia in 2000 and completed a PhD in veterinary medicine in 2009 at the University of Évora on Mycobacterium bovis molecular epidemiology.
Elsa is presently an Associate Professor of the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Évora, where she lectures microbiology and infectious diseases. She was appointed Director of studies of the PhD in Veterinary Science in 2013 and is currently the Group Leader of the Animal Bioscience Group of the research centre MED (Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development). Her current research interests include bacteriology, mycology, infectious diseases of wildlife and antimicrobial stewardship.
