Dr Gibbons qualified with a degree in veterinary medicine from University College Dublin (UCD) in 2000. After several years in general veterinary practice in Ireland and overseas he returned to UCD to study for a PhD in veterinary microbiology which focused on antimicrobial use and resistance in farm-animal production in Ireland. Following the completion of his PhD he lectured in veterinary microbiology and public health in the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in the University of Edinburgh and in 2013 he was appointed lecturer in veterinary public health in UCD. In 2018, James commenced employment as Head of Microbiology in the Irish Equine Centre (IEC), an independent, not-for-profit organisation whose aim is to protect the wellbeing of Ireland’s horse population. His interest include antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from all animal species, especially horses, and all aspects of bacterial diseases of horses.
