Dr. Sonja Kittl received her veterinary degree in 2009 from the University of Bern, Switzerland. After completion of a dissertation on Campylobacter she received her doctoral degree in 2010. Subsequently she completed a clinical internship at a small animal referral center and then worked for several months at a general veterinary practice before returning to the University of Bern to complete a PhD on molecular epidemiology and host-pathogen interaction of Campylobacter. After receiving her PhD degree, Sonja Kittl focused on diagnostics and joined the center for zoonoses, bacterial animal diseases and antimicrobial resistance (ZOBA) at the Institute of Veterinary Bacteriology, University of Bern, Switzerland. In 2017, she received her degree as diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists and in 2018 assumed her current position as head of the subdivision Surveillance and Diagnostics at the ZOBA. She acts as tutor and supervisor for residents of both the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists and the European College of Veterinary Microbiology and teaches veterinary students. Her research interests focus on application of next generation sequencing methods for molecular epidemiology and taxonomy.
